I'm no different. As I have been thinking about this blog entry over the last few weeks, I looked over my calendar from last year. Not that I'm a gig counting kind of guy, but at the end of the year, I do like to know.

With band gigs, orchestra jobs, fill in work and studio time... well it was a bunch. Well over 100 services. But that's not what excited me about this count. As I was looking over the list of gigs and such, snapshots of memories flooded back. The music has been spectacular, but what has made this year special is all of the fellowship shared with musicians and fans alike at all these events. And for that I am truly thankful.

I leave 2018 a better musician than I came in as. I hope I can say the same looking back as to the question “did I become a better person too?”

2019 holds promise of just as spectacular of a year. New projects (the Mad Anthonys and Flat Five Jazz) are rolling out and will be in the area before you know it. A new production project in the Roanoke area I’m very excited to be part of has begun – look for new on that in the upcoming months. Also looking forward to getting back out this year with Solar Hearts, the EHQ and Carrington Kay. Looking forward to seeing new friends and old.

Check the calendar page on my website for all the upcoming shows – and see you soon!

Lots of news, lots of updates, and new shows added...

Its been a great summer so far for my brothers and I in Long Strange Night . Killer show at Martin's in Roanoke on July 6th (which you can hear on archive.org a long with all of Long Strange Night's shows). Great to catch up with old friends and new. LSN will be announcing new shows in the next few days... so keep an eye out.

I have been asked last minute to help out the Vosbein-Magee Big Band at Salem, VA's Jazz in July festival, July 15th. If you are in the area, come check out some of the region's best jazz musicians in a relaxing outdoor setting.

Later that night I will be with Long Strange Night in Lynchburg, VA at Big Licks. Come on out and help us celebrate a couple of birthdays with Beatles, the Grateful Dead and Originals. July 15th - show starts at 8pm.

A new project, well new to me at least, Carrington Kay will be performing in Jonesborough TN's Music on the Square performance series. If you are in the area, stop on by and say hello.

The Tommy Cox Band had a great experience this past weekend, that... well.. because of the confidentiality agreement we really can't go into detail... BUT - as soon as we get the word, we will be letting you all know what went on and whats going on in the future. Some very exciting stuff indeed.

An finally a shout out to PJ and the folks at Spector Basses. The new Spector Legend Classic 5, in all its natural finish beauty, arrived and made its first onstage appearance a few weeks ago. To hear this monster, visit Long Strange Night's page or archive.org. The last two recordings feature my new baby.

Summer has opened up a few spots for lessons - contact me for available times for bass, upright bass, mandolin, or cello lessons.
Eric Hollandsworthtag:erichollandsworth.com,2005:Post/45691062017-01-30T13:11:42-05:002017-01-30T13:11:42-05:00Great weekend of music for sure!I don't often point out a specific weekend of music, or gigs or concerts... but this weekend was spectacular for a couple of reasons....

First of all, I got to play jazz ... to a packed house.... with great players... in Lynchburg. For you local folks, let that sink in.

The Eric Hollandsworth Quartet, featuring Dr. Chris Magee on trumpet, Bill Purcell on Drums, and Lew Taylor on Keys, played one of my favorite venues -Jimmy's on the James. Jimmy's is known for its history of supporting live jazz and we were excited to be there. It was nice to see both friends and colleagues out in support. It was truly great to have an audience engaged and listing to some really smoking jazz. Its nice to know that Jazz is still viable.

The second reason this weekend was great was the opportunity I had with Long Strange Night as we to begin the recording process on four of our original tunes. Productive time, killer tunes, great musicians. It was time for us to grow closer - as a band and as friends.

But more than anything else, this weekend was about the craft and art of music... and sharing it with the world. Whether it is just a small corner of the world in Lynchburg, VA or the world wide digital distribution we hope for Long Strange Night, we are placing art in the world. Art in the world not just to "make it better". Art meant to make you think. To make you feel. To make you question all aspects of humanity - the good and the bad.

Yes, music heals me. It always has and always will. But its more than that. It is a catalyst for change. A nostalgic link to long ago places and to long ago memories. And yes, medicine to heal.

Remember what the arts mean to you. How important they are to your life.

For me, I had a great weekend creating art.

EEric Hollandsworthtag:erichollandsworth.com,2005:Post/44836292016-11-25T12:48:44-05:002016-11-25T12:50:11-05:00A day late ... but stillIts a day late (according to the calendar) for giving thanks... but.....

Thank you to my students, both in my private studio and at Sweet Briar College - It is through you that I find myself still hungering to learn.

Thank you to my friends and family that support me in this crazy world of music - it is through you that I find my anchor.

Thank you to the venues and organizations that hire me - It is through you that I find my audience.

Thank you to my audiences - through you I find my art

and finally ...

Thank you to the musicians I work with - it is through you I find my voice in artistry

For all of this I am truly thankful

Eric Hollandsworthtag:erichollandsworth.com,2005:Post/43796512016-09-19T13:34:29-04:002016-09-19T13:35:26-04:00More Dates and new VideoNew dates have been added to my calendar - including shows in Roanoke with Long Strange Night and the James Chamber Players Holiday Concert at Oakwood Country Club in Lynchburg, VA.

If you head over to the Long Strange Night website (www.longstrangenight.com ) you can check out some new recordings as well as new video from our visit to the Dogtown Roadhouse in Floyd, VA this past summer.

I have a few lesson spots available Mondays and Tuesdays for Cello, Upright Bass, Electric Bass, Beginning Guitar and Ukulele Lessons - or if you want to get into the whys and hows of music theory - I offer one on one and group lessons for that as well.
